Lawn. Grass. Turf. This is the most I will probably ever talk about the stuff! It's not really my thing. The garden is my husband's domain. We have plenty of grass, and my husband is obsessed with getting it looking good. We have had a few bad patches here and there and he is always trying to fix the problem spots and loves to talk turf. Turf Australia recently offered to provide us with a lawn consultation and hubby needed no convincing on this one.
Most people don't really pay much attention to their good, old grass. It's under our feet in most of our backyards, covering a massive area, and yet we tend not to give it a second thought or really understand how best to look after it. A lovely man from Millers Turf in Sydney was sent out to us to check out our lawn, tell us how it looked, give us tips on how to best care for it and offer advice on how to fix problems or go about making any changes, as well as answer any questions. We learnt about the different types of turf and the different conditions they are best for. Our backyard is always in part sun and part shade and you could really tell this by how the grass was growing. You can see in the pic below.
Lots of questions were answered and hubby is keen to try the Sir Walter turf (which was the turf most recommended for our yard, and in fact most yards) out in a section of our yard to see how it takes. We may then slowly re-turf our yard with it.
It was certainly worth having Millers Turf come out to our place. Hubby was given a fair bit of reassurance that some of the care strategies he was employing were good, including how he was fertilising and watering the lawn. It was interesting to hear about the different types of turf and how they respond in different conditions and also how fast they grow which translates to how much mowing it will need!! Very important information for the mowers out there.
If you want to learn more about turf, head over to Turf Australia. There is information there about the different types of turf, care tips and there is a directory of professionals in your local area who can help you out like Millers Turf did for us.
And for mum/toddler/babe readers, Turf Australia are giving you the opportunity to win a $150 Bunnings voucher to put towards looking after your turf. All you need to do is leave a comment below telling me a little about the lawn at your place. Does it get lots of sun? Do you mow it or does hubby? What are the main activities that you do on your lawn? You can tell me anything you like!
Entries will close on Sunday 29 January at 11pm EST. I will announce a winner on Monday 30 January.

My lawn is epic!
ReplyDeleteIt has at least 3 different types of turf, which looks pretty ugly. It GROWS so quickly. My husband needs to mow it every 10-14 days or my yard looks like jumanji!!
It gets lots of sun but we also get weeds too. No bindis though which is great. I have terrible memories of running on the lawn and having a foot full of bindis!
I'd love to have picnics on our lawn but I have seen some black house spiders crawling around which is a little scary considering I've got 2 kids that play out there all day!
My husband is a lawn fanatic too :) He mows it nearly every weekend and is a bit obsessive with it's upkeep, fertilizing it, getting ready of any weeds etc. He's also not keen on guests parking on 'his lawn'. It's funny, I think my husband and our two neighbours are all secretly competing for the title of 'best lawn in the street'.
ReplyDeleteThe lawn in our new place is crazy- hubby mowed I one day and I swear it looked like it had grown the next!
ReplyDeleteWe have a big car- shaped slightly dingy looking patch in the backyard- hubby will be on the case to get that looking good.
Oh, we talk about our lawn quite a bit! It's a mix of scrappy, fast growing and prickly! There are plans to re-turf, so we can have soft, squishy grass. Our kids love to ride out there, play tennis, we fill up the plastic pool and we picnic out there. We love being on the grass!
ReplyDeleteRecently moved to Toowoomba from Sydney. The grass in the place where I'm staying is devine. I've been mowing it (I haven't mowed a lawn since I was a teen!) and there is NOTHING more refreshing than sitting on freshly mowed grass with that fresh grass smell. My kids are loving actually having a lawn to run on!
ReplyDeleteOur garden is a story of two lawns - one the thickest, fastest growing turf I have ever seen in our back garden, populated by goannas and the occasional passing black snake. The front lawn is our work in progress - constantly pecked over by chooks, inspected by me for bindies, tippytoed over by the kids on their way to the hen house to look for eggs- threadbare in parts, clover in others. Who mows? Me of course!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby is a grass nut as well. I like to walk on it and not have prickles in my feet... and he does his best to keep it that way. We've got shady and sunny parts and the people before us pretty much carved it up and left it like a dustbowl. The first few months we were here it was all about soil prep and then hubby started slowly returfing it. I'm not sure what he's laid but it's soft and lush and he quite cleverly cut the turf into smaller parts, laid it like a checkerboard and it has grown together nicely in the main section. I think we're going to start doing another section of it soon as it's annoying him with the patchiness... he'd rather have it all looking great. Some days I'm surprised we're allowed to walk on it, but we do. The kids have their swing set and slide (moved frequently to prevent bare patches) and the chooks love wandering over it.
ReplyDeleteWe have grass. Lots of grass. 1.5 acres of it. To put that into perspective, if the average houseblock is 500sqm we have 12 houseblocks worth of grass!
ReplyDeleteI employ a team of sheep to eat most of the grass, but we attempt to keep the houseblock nice and neat for the small one.
We take turns in mowing it (with a ride on), as I quite enjoy zooming around on my big orange lawn tractor. It gets watered regularly and weed and feeded on a regular basis. It has come a long way from the weeds that used to be there.
I love and adore (and adore and love) my backyard BUT the lawn drives me crazy. About half of it is buffalo (so grows slowly) and the rest is dodgy grass seed grass (so grows fast). Mowing it is pretty easy though and it is so so worth it to see my boy running crazy in the yard.
ReplyDeleteAhhh single mamahood- no sharing of the lawn mowing in this house ;)
We have a prized patch of lawn at the back of our yard. It has a slight slope to it so Amelie takes great delight in running down slope and squeals with delight as she gains momentum.
ReplyDeleteWe love it.
Mowing is strictly a man job in our house. At the moment hubby is working up a weekly sweat mowing it with a hand mower. It has been doing this for a year (what a trooper!). I can see an investment in an electric mower very soon.
This one is for my parents because they would love this prize.
ReplyDeleteThey have just bought a new house and my dad is a grass/garden nut he spends hours a day in the garden. But at their new house the grass is rather dead i think they jsut need to re-do the whole yard! and when we visit they will have some were nice for the kids to play :)
We were slowing getting on top of our grass with very regular mowing and trimming and lots of TLC but the recent floods left it covered in gravel and we are now mowerless (and neither of our neighbours have one either!).
ReplyDeleteWe have been painstakingly collecting the gravel but it's going to be a long process getting back on top of it again! I think some parts we might just end up giving up on grass and turning it into a play mulched area instead.
We have a front yard divided with a retaining wall, and a small backyard. I am not interested in the lawn in the slightest. My husband however is completley obsessed with his Sir Walter Buffalo! He trims and mows it every chance he gets, hand waters the dry patches in summer and is generally quite keen to make sure its the greenest and best looking lawn in the street. We actually have people stop quite frequently to ask him what type of fertiliser he uses/how often he waters/mows etc... !

One afternoon my husband said he was going to try and fix the lawn "abit" after 5 hours and alot of sighing and huffing he gave up and of course half the yard was dug up now... we now have pavers there:)

Our lawn is currently being transformed into a small lake thanks to the non-stop torrential rain Brisbane has been experiencing over the past 36 hours! When it dries up my husband will have a real job trying to tame it. After living in Canberra during the drought, and having a dust bowl in the backyard, we are ever so grateful for nice green grass and rain.
ReplyDeleteWe don't any lawn as yet... when we bought our house we inherited a lovely muddy sand patch dug up by 4 rott weilers. We have just finished refencing the whole property so we can finally start creating a safe and fun yard for our three little ones to play in.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I have never really thought or cared about grass. But we are in the process of choosing what turf to lay for our new home that we're building & I suddenly give a damn! I just want it to be soft & lush & for magic fairies to visit regularly to upkeep ;-) I too can't wait until we have a beautiful lawn for our children to play on.
ReplyDeleteWe have a mixture of lawns but my hubby lovingly mows it every week on the highest rung possible so it can be as soft as possible for the kids. He adores his lawn and preens it and gloats over it (although he'd much rather have a patch of Sir Walter).
ReplyDeleteJust last week, my Husband and I and our two babes moved into our very first home - and we love it! Hubby has spent the time after work every night since watering the grass, spraying weed and feed everywhere and even transplanting a few runners. We cant wait to have a nice lush green lawn - which it certainly isnt at the moment - so that the kids can have somewhere to run free and there's even room for a little cricket pitch - but I dont know that Hubby's dream of a putting green will come to fruition...
ReplyDeleteOurs is mowed each fortnight. I love a green lawn, mainly so the kiddies can play and enjoy soft grass under their feet :)
ReplyDeleteThe Lawn
ReplyDeleteWe slide on it
We roll in it
We lay and watch clouds in the sky
Hubbies fond of it
He talks about it
His attachment he can not deny
He stares at it
Spends hour with it
We watch him and wonder why
We sit on it
watch bugs on it
But the voucher will make him cry
Thanks for sharing such clarifying information.
ReplyDeleteKeep sharing.....
